  • International Journal of Sociology of Education

International Journal of Sociology of Education (RISE) is an international peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Hipatia Press that publishes empirical and theoretical contributions in the field of education from a sociological perspective, contributing to the advancement of knowledge on education and social change. In this sense, RISE publishes disciplinary and interdisciplinary work grounded in sociological and educational theories that advances understanding of social transformation and the overcoming of social inequalities through education.

RISE was established in response to the excessive determinism and dogmatism that have at times characterised strands of sociology emphasising the reproductive role of education in society. The journal aims not only to examine the mechanisms and processes through which education reproduces and may intensify social inequalities, but also to analyse the models, variables, scientific evidence and educational actions that foster social change and the overcoming of inequalities.

RISE seeks to serve as an international space for scholarly debate and critical reflection through the presentation of theoretical and empirical contributions from the sociological field that contribute to the improvement of societies through education.

The journal is addressed to researchers, scholars and professionals interested in current debates in Sociology of Education. RISE is published three times per year, with issues released on 25 February, 25 June, and 25 October. The journal follows an Online First publication model. Accepted articles are made available online as soon as they complete the editorial and production process, prior to assignment to a specific issue. Manuscripts may be submitted in English or Spanish.

RISE is indexed in major international databases, including Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) and Scopus. The journal is also recognised by national and international evaluation systems and quality frameworks.

    Focus and Scope

RISE publishes theoretical articles and original research findings in the field of education from a sociological perspective, using diverse methodological approaches grounded in scientific theory and evidence. The journal welcomes disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions that examine educational processes, institutions and policies, and that advance social transformation and the overcoming of social inequalities through education. The journal is particularly interested in research addressing the intersections between education and broader social structures, including inequality, power relations, stratification, migration, gender, policy and institutional change. Submissions are expected to demonstrate clear theoretical and analytical contributions and to engage with international debates, with relevance beyond the local context.

    What fits well in RISE

Submissions to RISE typically fit well when they:

    • Address educational phenomena through a clearly articulated sociological framework.
    • Analyse how education contributes to the reproduction and/or transformation of social inequalities.
    • Present empirical, theoretical or methodological contributions with clear relevance for sociology and education debates.
    • Include case studies, provided that they are analytically grounded and explicitly connected to broader sociological theory and international debates.
    • Focus on transformative educational approaches, actions or policies, supported by scientific evidence.

    What usually does not fit

Manuscripts are less likely to be considered for review when they:

    • Focus mainly on pedagogical, instructional or didactic aspects without a central sociological analysis.
    • Use university students or other easily accessible populations only for reasons of convenience, without addressing substantive questions in sociology of education.
    • Present descriptive studies that lack theoretical grounding or analytical contribution.
    • Address educational topics where social inequalities or social transformation are not analytically relevant.
    • Rely primarily on the application of validated scales or instruments without offering a substantive theoretical or analytical contribution.

    Types of contributions

RISE accepts the following types of manuscripts:

    • Empirical research articles, based on quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods, with a clear sociological analysis.
    • Theoretical articles that advance, revise or critically discuss frameworks within sociology of education.
    • Case studies, when they provide analytical value beyond the local context and are explicitly connected to global sociological debates.

    Mission

RISE’s mission is to disseminate high-quality, theoretically grounded and empirically robust research in Sociology of Education, promoting the production and circulation of rigorous, relevant, and socially engaged knowledge. The journal seeks to establish itself as an international academic forum that contributes to the critical understanding of education as a social institution, with particular attention to social inequalities, power relations and processes of social transformation.

RISE is committed to fostering open, ethical, and accessible science, ensuring that research contributes meaningfully to scholarly debates and informs discussions on education and social change. The journal aims to consolidate its position as a leading international forum for scholarly debate in Sociology of Education.

    Objectives

The International Journal of Sociology of Education (RISE) pursues the following objectives:

    • To publish original empirical and theoretical research grounded in rigorous methodologies and explicit sociological frameworks that advance knowledge in Sociology of Education.
    • To promote international academic dialogue by fostering the participation of scholars from diverse geographical, theoretical and methodological traditions, encouraging comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives anchored in a clear sociological approach.

  • The Journal of Deliberative Mechanisms in Science

Fourth issue of DEMESCI already available!!

The Journal of Deliberative Mechanisms in Science (DEMESCI) is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes original works on the relation between science and the rest of society. The articles provide insight into the growing dimensions of sciencein democracy. DEMESCI is oriented towards the academic world, stakeholders and all types of collectives interested in exploring the relations and tensions of science and technology with different publics and a variety of social institutions. In this respect, the journal intends to come up with a better critical understanding of the conceptualization and potential application of practices that create new spaces for deliberation in science. In the context of the co-production between science and society, DEMESCI then focuses on related areas of research such as citizen science, scientific controversies about health and the environment, public engagement with science, advocacy research, social impact of science, and evidence-based decision making, among others.

DEMESCI is a multidisciplinary journal that will publish articles based on disciplines such as Sociology, HistoryAnthropology, and Political Science, among others. DEMESCI also promotes the transdisciplinary character of science, encouraging the submission of articles that combine these and other approaches in a single academic work. We then expect scholars from successful fields of study such as Science and Technology Studies to submit their articles as well.

Articles in any language are welcome. All research articles will be available on open access. DEMESCI does not charge Article Processing Charges (APCs) nor submission charges to its authors for publication.

    --------------

Established in 2019 as The International Journal of Roma Studies (IJRS; ISSN: 2462-425X). IJRS particularly focuses on the analysis of the intersections and patterns of discriminations suffered by Ethnic minorities in general and the Roma in particular, as well as those strategies to reverse them.

IJRS is an Open Access journal that welcomes empirically based research articles, broader reviews as well as theoretical reflections that contribute to the advancement of the existing scientific knowledge on Ethnic minorities, with a special focus on Roma constituencies, from different disciplines (from sociology, ethnic and cultural studies, anthropology, linguistics, political science, among others).

Particularly, the journal will serve as a platform to publish cutting edge and innovative research in the field of Ethnic  and Roma Studies that contributes to addressing the needs and problems affecting ethnic minorities, while moving beyond exclusionary perspectives both objectifying and essentializing minorities. Contributions might be conducted from a wide range of methodologies: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Specially valued will be those works conducted from dialogic-based research methodologies which promote the participation of researched communities themselves, and which deepen in the analysis of those elements that allow ethnic groups to organize and thus exert their human agency.

The IJRS review process will strictly follow a rigorous double-blind peer review, based on initial editor screening and posterior two anonymous referees. Thus, IJRS requires all papers to strictly meet the international ethical standards as contemplated by international professional organizations.

This scientific journal is a multilingual journal which will be publishing articles in English, Spanish and French, and is published two times a year (May and November).

  • Social Impact of Research

The Social Impact of Research (SIR) is an Open Access journal that has as its main objective the publication of top research about the social impact of the research in all sciences.

The social impact of sciences has been extraordinary throughout human history; from the reduction of child mortality or the understanding of the Universe to the current citizenship awareness on climate change or clarifying the successful social actions. It would not have been possible without scientists dedicating their lives to the progress of knowledge.

Periodically we face incomprehensible situations like budget cuttings in scientific research, people questioning its utility, or people following more the useless comments of junk TV personalities that the evidences provided by scientists. This scientific journal will publish both researches from all fields that have achieved remarkable social impact, and researches about the social impact of sciences.

SIR publishes articles in English. It aims to be indexed and abstracted as soon as possible in International Social Sciences databases such as the Science Citation Index, SCOPUS, ERIH PLUS or DOAJ.

Peer Review Policy. All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous double-blind peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by two anonymous referees.
